Belly Talks with Ümral

Looking at personal stories, this performance aims to fill the gaps between incommunicable bodies with intricate failures. It reveals the knowledge how the performer and Ümral, her grandmother, carry their bellies. The performer digs into the privacy of her family's oldest feminist to find her way within this ancestral question mark.

What can be told when the body is not danced, undressed, or enjoyed in a story? Is writing a grandmothers' absent story even relevant? Is it what the absence asks for? What happens if performer does not only reclaim her belly but also her grandmother's? Does it make anyone happy?

These are not just operational questions; they are feminist inquiries and inquiries of love.

Burcu Bilgiç (1987, İstanbul)  is a female artist/dancer/editor that used to live in İstanbul. Now living in Berlin, she produces performance works that mingles self-reflexive text with physical craft.
