Éducation Aventureuse

Publication on ten years of experimental teaching in the choreography program at the HZT Berlin

The recently released publication “Éducation Aventureuse” brings together experiences from ten years of experimental teaching in the choreography program at the HZT Berlin. During this time, the program has repeatedly left the confines of the university in order to enable students and teachers to have encounters that leave the institutional framework and the routines of everyday student life behind, at least for a short time - by traveling, collaborating with unusual partners and working in landscapes beyond stage spaces and studios. We see this movement into the open as constitutive of choreographic practice - a movement towards social situations in which attention is drawn to the overlooked and the remote, to other temporalities and to the political in everyday life.

The publication documents trips by teachers and students to France, Iran, Italy and Austria. With contributions by Susanne Traub, Susanne Vincenz, Wanda Golonka, Ingo Reulecke, Niels Weijer, Mohammad Abbasi, Melika Akbari, Maria Rutanen, Dina Sennhauser, Claire Federica Crescini, Akemi Nagao, Elvan Tekin, Tim Winter, Carolina de Vega, Holger Seidelin, Melissa Herrada, Onur Özyurt, Pooyesh Frozandeh, Leo Naomi Baur, Heike Albrecht, Yuko Matsuyama, Johanna Jörns, Felipe Fizkal, Vera Shchelkina, Christiane Berger and Isabel Robson.

The book allows you to look over the shoulder of a choreographic practice on the road and conveys impressions of the more or less adventurous learning experiences that were provoked in the process. It brings together voices and photos of students, alumni, team and companions in snapshots of texts and images that convey excerpts of what choreographic practice can be beyond stage art and how research-based teaching opens up new approaches for the choreographic field.

The book can be ordered by sending an e-mail to office_mac[at]hzt-berlin.de.

Epilogue by Prof. Wanda Golonka

Passing on

Making connections - and imparting knowledg
Provoke experiences
Experiment, keep experimenting
Create trust
On the path of feeling
Activate inner listening.
So that in this unknown, unnamed,
personal space,
the inner landscape unfolds,
embodies itself.
Create a time-space and maintain it energetically.
A question of rhythm,

No tricks, no rules and no answers.

Create confusion,
shake what is memorised,
hold on to it,
accumulate and then let go.

Open.
Absolute demanding behaviour of yourself.

Resting in touch
Commit yourself fully and completely,
give yourself the chance,
to resist
to create
what others may not like.

Position yourself above, below or diagonally.
But not on the side of expectations.

Stay alert.
Questioning, change your perspective.
Do the opposite, throw it away.
Go backwards and try again.

To immerse them in a sensitive humus,
into the untrodden, into speed,
so that an expression, a new dance emerges.

And now unknot
no
knot.
