This Uncharted Tongue 母知
© Frieda LukThis tongue is meant to be uncharted.
Each word I relearn arrives cracked,
not to be mended, but to be held as it hesitates, invents, borrows, and breaks.
This tongue stutters through time,
through the ghosts of colonial grammar and imperial silence.
To speak is not to restore, but to glitch.
Not to remember, but to recompose.
Not to record, but to rehearse.
Not to reproduce, but to recharge.
These words hack a sense of strangeness to me: what does it mean to belong to something you do not know? Can you carry what you do not claim? Can you own what resists knowing?
literal translation of Chinese title:母 (mother) 知 (knows)
