Meditations on Amphibiousness [Stream]

Hope Ginsburg will speak about her recent and upcoming projects at the intersection of meditation, environment and interspecies well-being. Each of her recent works makes a climate-related proposal – from practicing present moment awareness with equanimity as a strategy for coping with climate change in Land Dive Team videos, workshops and performances (2014–present); to the analogy of amphibiousness for cultivating multispecies awareness in Land Dive Team: Amphibious James (2018); and a laboring with communities of hard corals for our shared survival in the collaborative, multichannel video Swirling (2019). All projects in her recent exhibition “Sponge Exchange” (2020) were collaborative, proposing the ecological premise of sharing of resources, ideas and opportunities. That project was underpinned by the Sponge body of work (2006–2016), a series of workshops and a headquarters that took the sea sponge’s biology as a model for cooperation and that animal’s function on the reef as an inspiration for knowledge exchange. Meditation and its invitation to attention has been a central part of Ginsburg’s work since 2014. Her new project Meditation Ocean (M.O.) will delve deeply into the capacity of mindfulness practice to build resilience in community. The work’s form will be multi-channel video projection with extensive participation and programming. M.O. expands Ginsburg’s current practice; bringing together climate change, environmental justice and health.
