Rhys Martin graduated from Sydney University in Literature and Fine Arts before his move into dance and Australia’s innovative fringe theatre scene, where he was a founding member of the experimental One Extra Dance Company under choreographer Kai tai Chan, eventually performing with the company in London. After briefly working with a dance in education company in England, he moved to Germany to join Reinhild Hoffman’s internationally celebrated Bremer Dance Theatre. After touring extensively, he later moved with the choreographer to work alongside the acting ensemble of the Bochumer Schauspielhaus. Since 1986 he has worked extensively as freelance director and choreographer for dance, opera, musical, film and theatre. His work was awarded first prize at the Unesco XII Choreographer's Competition in Cologne and at the Theaterzwang Theatre Festival in Nordrhein-Westfalen, recommended for a London New Choreographers Award and a special mention in the Concours de Lausanne in Switzerland.
