Jo Parkes is a freelance dance artist and educator (DE/UK). She works in co-creative participative dance, creating installations, events, performances and videos. Jo’s work is socially engaged. She understands co-creative processes as research for collective living: a laboratory in which diverse groups of people investigate themes of interest to them. She is founder and artistic director of Mobile Dance e.V. Mobile Dance offers arts projects at the intersection of artistic and socio-political concerns. Jo guest lectures, speaks and leads workshops internationally.
In 1995, Jo received a Fulbright scholarship to complete her Master of Fine Arts in Choreography at UCLA. She has a first class degree in English Literature and Modern Languages from Oxford University. In 2019, she won the honorary prize in the German Dance Award for her outstanding contribution to dance in Germany. Jo is on the board of Action Dance: Dance in Education and Society and 2020 - 2021 she is guest professor at HZT, Berlin.
