MATRIA - motherland

The choreography in MATRIA – motherland explores the forces between physical presence and colonial history through the incarnation of malambo, the gaucho dance of resistance, currently known in Argentina as the exclusive solo competition between men. The dancers, through their legwork, the instrument of the bombo drum and the boleadoras (native hunting instrument modified by the gauchos as a weapon), embody the gestures of fighting on horseback and at the same time negotiate their own perseverance in dance. A connection between the emerging dance of malambo rhythms and its more disciplining aspect shows up as a continuation of colonial relations.
