SODA WORKS FESTIVAL - PRESS RELEASE 2.11.2017

HZT celebrates its 10th anniversary, since its 2007 founding, with a 4-week festival not to be missed. Its English-led postgraduate MA SODA program (Master of Arts Solo/ Dance/ Authorship) has put together a lineup of performances, exchanges, and events, to share this success with its contributors, supporters, and audiences.

The festival combines both alumni and current student work and will run daily from November 18 through December 16. The first day of the festival opens with an exciting publication release documenting SODA’s arrival onto the international education landscape.

Just like the name suggests, SODA has become the medium to combine a cocktail of divergent approaches to body based art making. From the outrageous to the meditative and introspective, dancers, choreographers, theatre makers, musicians, visual artists, philosophers and other theorists have shared a unique space of thinking, researching and making new cutting edge performance.

Ten years ago, complementing its partners programs at the HZT, the MA in Choreography and the BA in Context, Choreography and Dance, SODA set out to provide an internationally unique opportunity for body-based performance artists from around the globe attracted to the ideas of solo, dance, and authorship, to return to academia to explore the singular potential of their own performance practice.

Now ten years on, with a steady flow of interest and applications and over 60 graduates from all over the world SODA established itself as a voice in international dance education and research.

The best way to see this in action is to drop into one of the 50 scheduled events.
Current student performances are gratis and all other performances 5€.

10 YEARS HZT –  PRESS RELEASE AS OF 11.4.2017

10 years of the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin A forward-looking institution for experimental and professional higher education in dance and choreography.

10 Jahre HZT Berlin
>10 Jahre HZT Berlin

The Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT) is an integral part of both the Berlin and International dance and performance scene. This year, the HZT celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Ten years on from its establishment, HZT is one of Europe’s most important education institutes for contemporary dance and choreography. The HZT offers a strong combination of academic formation and professional artistic practice. The different courses of study are oriented towards the experimental, and combine artistic teachings, scientific principles and vocational guidance.

A CENTRE WITH TWO PARTNER UNIVERSITIES AND A CLOSE CONNECTION TO THE FREELANCE SCENE
The first students for the pilot phase were accepted in 2007 - whereafter the HZT began as a pilot project as part of ‘Tanzplan Deutschland,’ an initiative of the state cultural foundation for the advancement of dance. HZT has been running as an institution since 2010. It is supported through the Universität der Künste Berlin and the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst »Ernst Busch« in cooperation with TanzRaum Berlin, a network for the professional dance scene in Berlin. The HZT has been a part of the city’s art scene since it was founded, and gives impulses through public performances and contrasting contents. HZT graduates are in engaged in a number of different fields of work and networks, and through them spread new approaches to dance and choreography in different areas of society.

FUTURE GOALS AND FOCUSSES
HZT is using its anniversary year as an opportunity to set new targets: artistic and scientific research will be strengthened and cooperation projects developed. HZT wants to initiate projects that will further integrate dance into society and spark social processes - dance should no longer be limited to the stage. As of the Summer Semester 2017, students of the Masters Degree Course will be developing and presenting choreographic works in unusual locations around the city. Another HZT-project is being prepared wherein artists are invited to develop choreographies in countryside areas.

RENOWNED DANCE CREATORS TEACHING AT HZT BERLIN
Professor Thomas Plischke was hired as an artistic professor and director of the Dance, Context and Choreography B.A. in March 2017. The multi award-winning choreographer has been working continuously with Dr Kattrin Deufert as the “artist twin” deufert&plischke since 2001. Their collaborative working methods and their view of theatre as a social situation - from general rehearsal to performance - will shape the future profiles of the courses of study. Two further professors of arts and science will be appointed over the course of the year.

GRADUATES ARE PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL DANCE SCENE
HZT graduates are to be found in many artistic projects within the Berlin and international dance scenes.
